So often in client meetings I start rambling about the benifits of SEO… I get stopped, wowww, woowww wooooow, what is SEO? So I remember quickly that I need to give a short and simple explanation.
Search engine optimisation (SEO) is the process of improving the visibility of a website or a web page in search engines via the “natural” or un-paid search results. In general, the earlier (or higher ranked on the search results page), and more frequently a site appears in the search results list, the more visitors it will receive from the search engine’s users.
SEO takes time to implement, initial on page optimisation in the first month will be the biggest benefit, but google doesn’t look at every website everyday. It’s a constant job to keep updating content, improving pages and items behind the scenes.
Internal SEO is defined by any work done within the actual pages of the website to improve ranking. Specifying keywords, tittles of pages and descriptions for all pages and categories within the website.
On page optimisation is the process of defining the code behind each page on the website to target specific keywords related to that page and the brand. These descriptions define what shows up in the google results and help define at what number result your website displays in the results, example below:
JEEP is the highlighted keyword being targeted.
Page Title: Jeep Australia | 4×4, SUV, Off Road, 4WD Vehicles
Page Description: Jeep Australia offer a complete range of 4x4s, SUVs and Off Road vehicles. Take a look at the NEW Jeep 2012 range!
Page Keywords: suv,4wd,suvs,crossovers,4×4 off road,small suv,mid size suv,crossover vehicles,
External SEO includes link building (getting other websites to link back to yours), directory listings, submissions to search engines, written and published articles and mentions linking back to your website. This is an ongoing process managed monthly and reported on each month.
Search Engine Marketing (SEM) on the other hand is when you pay for advertising on the search engines, you will appear in the sponsored links, up the top or down the right hand side in google. These ads also appear within other sites which allow the placement of google ads, and sometimes at the top of your gmail account. These are text only ads, but tailored to specific keywords and you can write the title and description including the URL displayed to your needs. Easy to setup and start trialing with a google adwords account.
There is a great ariticle over here at Social Media Today, that explains how getting your website setup correctly and keeping everything relevant is the key.
